The other party has two ideas for growth - more taxs cuts for the wealthy (paid for by raising tax burdens on the middle class and gutting investments like education) and getting rid of regulations we've put in place to control the excesses on wall street and help consumers. These ideas have been tried, they didnt work, and will make the economy worse. I want to keep promoting advanced manufacturing that will bring jobs back to America, promote all-American energy sources (including wind and solar), keep investing in education and make college more affordable, rebuild our infrastructure, invest in science, and reduce our deficit in a balanced way with prudent spending cuts and higher taxes on folks making more than $250,000/year. I don't promise that this will solve all our immediate economic challenges, but my plans will lay the foundation for long term growth for your generation, and for generations to follow. As AI becomes a bigger part of the internet, we want to make sure that when you’re on Reddit, you know when you’re talking to a person and when you’re not.\n\nSo we’re making a few changes.\n\nOur strategy here is to go from the bottom up (i.e., deal with the bots), because on Reddit, you should assume that anyone you’re talking to is a human unless otherwise labeled. A few of the principles behind how we’re approaching this:\n\n* Verifying someone is human is not the same as knowing who they are\n* We don’t have or want your real-world identity\n* Automated use of Reddit can be useful in some cases (i.e., “good bots”), but we have to be careful\n\n# What’s happening\n\n**1. Clear labeling for non-human accounts**\n\nAt the end of last year, we launched verified profiles for brands, publishers, and creators. Accounts that use automation in allowed ways (what many call “good bots”) will be labeled as \\[App\\]. Continued removal of nefarious bots and spam**\n\nWe hate it as much as you do and already remove the vast majority of it (an average of 100K accounts per day), often before anyone sees it. Human verification for automated or otherwise fishy behavior**\n\nIf something suggests an account isn’t human, including automation (hi, web agents), we may ask it to confirm there’s a person behind it. This will be rare and will not apply to most users. Accounts that can’t pass may be restricted. \n\nTo be clear, **this is not sitewide human verification**, let alone sitewide ID verification.\n\n**4. Reporting suspected automation**\n\nRedditors have long been the best bullshit detectors, and increasingly great Turing testers. We’ll make reporting easier and more flexible (these days, we can infer most issues from a report without a lot of context). I’d also like to include comments from other users pointing something out (e.g., “nice post, bot, now fuck off”), since that’s most users’ preferred reporting method.\n\n# Privacy\n\nBoth due to AI reshaping the internet and increasing regulation around the world requiring various forms of identity or age verification, we are exploring ways to confirm humanness and comply with these regulations without compromising user privacy. The best long-term solutions will be decentralized, individualized, private, and ideally not require an ID at all.\n\nIf we need to verify an account is human, we’ll do it in a privacy-first way. Our aim is to confirm there is a person behind the account, not who that person is. The goal is to increase transparency of what is what on Reddit while preserving the anonymity that makes Reddit unique. You shouldn’t have to sacrifice one for the other.\n\nWhen confirming that there is a human behind an account, we prefer third-party tools that keep a distance between verification and Reddit itself. Any system we use will not expose your real-world identity to Reddit nor your Reddit username or activity to any third party. There are a handful of ways to do this, and I’m sure there will be more. Each have their tradeoffs:\n\n* **Passkeys** (which are well supported by Apple, Google, YubiKey, and various password managers) - These are lightweight, require a human to do something, and don’t require your ID. The tradeoff is that there is no proof of individuality or anything other than “a human probably did something.” Nevertheless, it’s a great starting point.\n* **Third-party biometric services** \\- For example, World ID (yes, the Orb company, though they have non-Orb solutions as well). This technology unlocks proof-of-individual without requiring your name, government ID, or a centralized database. I think the internet needs verification solutions like this, where your account information, usage data, and identity never mix.\n* **Third-party government ID services** \\- In some countries, such as the UK and Australia, governments require us to use these. These are the least secure, least private, and least preferred. When we are forced to do this, we design the integrations so that we never actually see your ID information, so your Reddit data cannot be tied to you.\n\n# What about AI-generated content?\n\nThere is, of course, the gray area of humans using AI to write. We see it too and agree that it can feel off, but we’re not going to overcorrect on that now, at least at a sitewide level. We’ll monitor its usage and see what happens as we crack down even more on automated accounts. As always, communities can set their own standards if they want. \n\nFor better or worse, using AI to write is part of how people will communicate in the future (albeit annoying), so our current focus is to ensure there is a real, live human behind the accounts you’re seeing. Before there was AI slop, there was slop. The length of the conversation provided a rich context for me to work with ChatGPT effectively. It was hugely beneficial.\n\nThen, yesterday, the last month or so of work completely vanished. I referenced an older concept we had worked on and the conversation returned to that point - as if everything since had never happened. And, needless to say, a lot of conversation had happened in the last month. Real solid work.\n\nSo, I downloaded the conversation history, expecting the seemingly truncated part to be there (over a month's worth of near daily, in-depth conversation). It wasn't. It seems to have been really deleted. ChatGPT's customer service has yet to answer me about what happened or why.\n\nSo, be forewarned, if you're using AI for something serious and long-form, you should be aware of this problem and the risk it presents to you.\n\nYou obviously can't rely on ChatGPT to back-up your data, so, do so yourself, and religiously, or you might find yourself in the same position.\n\nUPDATE 1:  ChatGPT customer service got back to me and insists I deleted the chat. LOL. I did not delete the chat. The chat still exists, it is just missing a month + of data. I am looking at the chat.\n\nUPDATE 2: ChatGPT itself thinks there was a memory corruption issue or a memory migration issue. Or it dropped a contiguous block of the conversation instead of segmenting it. **So technically the data likely still exists, but is orphaned from the rest of the conversation. Why it is connected to my account but not accessible, even in an orphaned state, is beyond me. It should still be accessible in an export, even in its orphaned state. Alas.**\n\nAs for why this happened in my specific case, it said:\n\n* *Weeks-long continuous thread*\n* *Thousands of words per message*\n* *Iterative rewriting*\n* *Deep inter-message dependency (not modular questions)*\n\n*This is stress-testing ChatGPT where the system is weakest.*\n\n*The product is not actually designed for that yet — even if it feels like it is.*\n\nFANTASTIC! :/\n\nUPDATE 3:  \nSeveral people here have noted this has happened when doing long research projects, coding, or when writing a book. The last one caught my attention. That's what I was doing as well. Context and long-term familiarity with the project is a huge help on projects like that. For those who are engaged in this kind of work, the answer is to use Projects (see comments below), and of course, save early, save often.\n\nGlad the community taught me something.\n\nUPDATE 4:\n\nOpenAI said an engineer would get back to me in a few days. Claude pushes back more, asks questions to guide you into considering things. It genuinely felt impressive.\n\nAs I started to use it more though, especially for technical discussions, I noticed Claude hallucinates way more than ChatGPT.\n\nSo how how usually interact with ChatGPT is that whenever I ask something, I make sure I check \"Web search\". It then reliably consults online resources, first. It's a strong mode I can switch ChatGPT into. With Claude, \"Web search\" is already on by default but Claude uses it \\*way\\* less. Completely unreliable during a session.\n\nSo I was discussing the nuances of some DDD topic, and was put completely on the wrong track a bunch of times. I had to correct Claude (telling it explicitly to look it up online), instead of \\_it\\_ correcting \\_my\\_ assumptions. And that's only because I already knew some of the details from earlier research. I never feel like that with ChatGPT. \n\nChatGPT may be a complete bore and antagonising at times with the sycophancy and the comfort-ceremony, but I can count on it to be more sceptical of its own knowledge, as it defaults to online resources more often.
